Nigerians spent some N401.25 billion on voice calls and text messages between November last year and January this year, according to the findings of the latest data released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
This was arrived at by multiplying the total number of active subscribers in the country for the period and the average revenue per user (ARPU); used to measure the amount of revenue generated per cell-phone user which was at N1, 090.
A further analysis showed that there were 144.5 million subscribers in January this year and if each spent N1, 090 on calls and text messages: the network operators would have raked in N157.5 billion.
Also for the month of December and November, the operators would have made N123.4 billion and 120.3 billion on 111.2 million and 110.3 million subscribers respectively.
According to the apex regulator’s data, MTN, Glo, Airtel and Etisalat contributed the additional 1.3 subscribers while CDMA and fixed line operators recorded declines in their subscriber base.
