Nigerians clamouring for better services from telecommunications operators will have breather in 2010, which is two years from now with the expected deployment of 50,000 base transmitter stations.
A report by New Media and Development Communication, a course of Columbia School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) designed and led by Professor Anne Nelson said that by 2010, Nigerians can expect 40,000 GSM base stations and 10,000 CDMA base stations.
The report noted that at least 40 cities have broadband coverage, with 3.5million of wireline, 30,000 km of optic fibre; 25,000 km of microwave. At least 10 major cities will have metro cable networks within the same period.

also gathered that operators are seeking intervention of National Assembly to stop some state governments that have passed legislation on regulating towers built in their state. investigations revealed that the expected increase in the building of base station is fallout of pressure from the regulatory body in the sector, Nigerian Communications Commission and National Assembly. Operators have embarked on massive network expansion to meet the key performance indicators issued by NCC as a measure to ensure improved quality of service. Presently, the three major GSM operators have over 9,800 base stations; with MTN 3,500, Glo 3,300 and Celtel 3,000. According to the report, GSM operators are expected to increase their present capacity by over 300 percent.
