The federal government earned $1.2 million from technical services rendered through Universal Postal Union (UPU) in the last one year.
This is coming as Nigeria eyes the exalted office of the UPU, by seeking re-election as chairman of its finance committee as well as jostling for elections into other organs of the union at the next 2008 Geneva Congress in Switzerland.
Nigeria is also seeking elections into some sensitive council of UPU. These include the Postal Operations Council (Poc), Administrative Council (AC), Quality of Science Board (QoSB), Universal Service Obligation Group (Usog), Telematic Operations Committee (Toc) and Publicity Sector (PS).
Mallam Ibrahim Mori Baba, post master-general, spoke in Abuja while briefing journalists on the update of Nigeria membership of UPU. He disclosed that France is currently assisting Nigeria and 25 other member countries in the areas of financial services such as cash transfer, gira-banking, among others.
The Geneva Congress, Baba said, will review the strategies adopted four years ago at the 2004 Bucharest Congress otherwise known as the Bucharest World Postal Strategy (BWPS), the rules and regulations on operation, as well as review administrations and analyze the main results achieved within the framework of the recommendations of the strategy.
"The forthcoming 24th Universal Postal Union Congress is the most important international conference for every serious postal operator, because it will provide excellent opportunities for industry leaders to speak on current issues as it concerns best practice regulatory matters", Baba said.
"Nipost’s mission is to provide a public service and in carrying out this mandate, the service is expected to adopt a more commercial and business-like approach in order to serve customers effectively. One of the means of achieving this is through the participation at the forthcoming congress in Geneva", he concluded.
