NIPOST to Set Up Banks in Rural Areas

Nigerian Postal Services (NIPOST) is working closely with banks to serve as intermediaries where customers can withdraw and save money in rural communities where there are no banking facilities.

Hajiya Simbiat Lawal Lawal, senior assistant post master general and the head of Corporate Communication, Nigerian Postal Services, said that “NIPOST is working closely with banks to serve as intermediaries where customers can withdraw and save money in rural communities where there are no banking facilities. This innovation is being done with the support of the Central Bank of Nigeria,” she stated.

She gave the hint on the occasion of the World Post Day, stressing that Nigeria postal services was leaving no stone unturned in keying into the information communication technology to provide quality postal services that would satisfy all the aspirations.

The senior assistant postmaster general said the World Post Day was celebrated in 189 countries of the world, adding that the celebration was done worldwide to celebrate stakeholders and customers.

According Lawal, the universal postal services union was encouraging its members to be innovative and inclusive.

She disclosed that the postal services had demonstrated a huge capacity to facilitate exchange of information and goods.

The post with its wide physical presence in the remotest part of the country was undoubtedly a major player in the information society.

The Nigeria Postal Service is working with the Ministry of Education to encourage the art of letter writing among students in primary and secondary schools.

She noted that letter writing is a good form of communication that promotes love and care among family members.

According to her, “there is need to promote philately, the art of collecting and keeping stamps, among children and youth.”

She added that that stamp collection was the king of hobbies to some people.

She said stamps were historical in nature, and therefore urged more Nigerians to engage in philately.

She emphasised that ICT was not a threat to NIPOST, but rather enhanced its service delivery.

She added that with the advent of internet, tracking of mail was being done, and more efficiently.
