As more Nigerians are getting on the .ng train, the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) said it is excited about the development, as the Board has specially consented to making .name.ng domain names to be very affordable, at a price not more than N500, Nigeria CommuncationsWeek gathered.
The domain names count from January to June 2016 include 14,966 registrations and 9,271 renewals.
In June 2016, 2,767 new domain names were registered, 1,686 domain names were renewed and there were 96 transfers between the NiRA Accredited Registrars. The renewal rate, according to NiRA is encouraging as well.
Speaking through NiRA e-newsletter, Rev’ Sunday Folayan, the President, said that many Nigerian businesses now proudly use their .ng domain names as business identities.
“More registered domains names mean that the per unit cost of registering domain names will be lower, so NIRA can afford to make the domains even more affordable.
The NIRA Executive Board wants all Nigerians to be able to register and use the .name.ng string, even in conjuction with their existing Free or Paid email services. The Board has specially consented to making .name.ng domain names to be very affordable, at a price not more than N500. Yes - Five Hundred Naira per domain. The prices of all domain strings are now reduced, to get more Nigerians on board.
“In the coming days, as more registrars update their platforms, you will notice the price reduction reflecting on the purchase of .ng domain names that you make. You can also share this good news with friends and associates. I encourage all to take advantage of the reduced pricing structure, to get your .ng domain names.
.ng As A Tool For Entrepreneurship Development Among The Nigerian Youth
Similarly, NiRA has identified the development and transformation of Nigeria as highly dependent on youth empowerment through Entrepreneurship.
Youths, they reiterated, are the backbone of economic development all over the world and they play important roles for employment, income generation and societal changes, particularly in transition economies like Nigeria.
“Entrepreneurship is more than simply “starting a business.” It is a process through which individuals identify opportunities, allocate resources, and create value. This creation of value is often through the identification of unmet needs or through the identification of opportunities for change.
“The vast opportunities available in the Domain Name System (DNS) industry for entrepreneur cannot be over emphasized, but this has not been sufficiently harnessed in Nigeria and as such, the vast growth and Internet boom has been somewhat sluggish in Nigeria.
“Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) has over the years encouraged and developed programs that facilitates the breeding of Entrepreneurs within the DNS industry in Nigeria. Under the .ng platform, several opportunities exists for Nigerian youths,” among other solutions offered by NiRA.
