NiRA Registers, Renews 3234‎ ‎.ng Domain Names in March

Mary Uduma, President, NiRA

Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) has released report on the number of domain name registration on .ng for the Month of March 2015.

According to the report, ‘Domain Name Report – January to March 2015’, there was increase in the registration, renewal and transfer of .ng domain names in March 2015.

Adding the number of domain name registration (1,805) and domain name renewal (1,429) in March 2015, NiRA said the number has risen to 3234 domain names for the month.

The renewal of domain names at the second level contributed to the increase of the renewals, according to Mrs. Mary Uduma, president, executive board, Nigeria internet Registration Association (NiRA).

NiRA has earlier opened up for domain names registration at second level in March 2014 “and some of these fell due for renewal,” she added.

Uduma said the Association is still expectant of increased growth in .ng domain name activities.

MONTH    REGISTRATION    RENEWAL    TRANSFER
JANUARY    1,542    1,070    41
FEBRUARY    1,512    1,048    45
MARCH    1,805    1,429    67

She added that Nigeria could save billions of naira lost to foreign domain names, if many Nigerians patronise the indigenous domain name.

The Federal Government had given states and local governments as well as Millennium Development Agencies (MDAs) in Nigeria, August 2014, as deadline to switch to Nigeria’s .ng domain name.

Uduma explained that the directive was in a bid to protect state machineries from intentional and unintentional abuse.

She also believes that Nigeria’s .ng domain name provides good visibility and progress for business in Nigeria and across the world.

The NiRA President, therefore, asked business people and individuals to bring their businesses and themselves online by blogging on .ng.
