The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) through the Office for Nigerian Content Development in ICT (ONC), has indicated readiness to ensure compulsory hosting of government data in the country.
This was contained in an invitation to stakeholders to attend the First Annual Summit on Data Hosting in Nigeria by ONC.
ONC is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) established as a sustainable institutional framework to enforce compliance with the regulatory Guidelines for Nigerian Content Development in ICT under the NITDA Act of 2007.
The strategic role of the ONC is to help develop a truly indigenous ICT industry for wealth creation in the Local Economy through the implementation of the Guidelines.
According to ONC's letter endorsed by Mr. Inye Kemabonta, the national coordinator, and sent to expected attendees to the Summit, the purpose of the summit is to specifically ensure compliance with Section 14.1.2 of the Guidelines, which addresses data and information management and mandates data and information management firms to Host government data locally.
"A breach of the Guidelines is a crime under sections 17 (4) and 18 of the NITDA Act of 2007," Kemabonta said.
