Celtel Nigeria has confirmed that it has awarded Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) contract to build 4000km of Nationwide Fibre Optic backbone infrastructure for Celtel Nigeria.
The deal thought to be worth $130 million would culminate in NSN supplying best-in-class microwave transmission equipment to transform Celtel's best-in-class Internet Protocol (IP) technology.
The contract represents a huge overall boost for Nigeria's telecommunications capacity and development, mostly with the urge to offer Next Generation Services.
Mr. Lars Stork, chief operating officer (COO) of Celtel Nigeria said that Celtel is also expanding the existing 3000km microwave transmission backbone to 5,000 kilometer.
Nigeria CommunicationsWeek gathered that work is almost completed in the fibre optic connecting other parts of the south east states and other parts of the country including Port Harcourt, Enugu , Asaba, Lagos and Abuja .
He said that Celtel has since mid last year embarked on massive generator swap out and dualization, explaining that the project completed 100 per cent in the Lagos region is on going in other regions of the country.
"By the end of this year, we shall have within our network a total of 6,200 power generators to take care of the challenges of power supply," he said.
The company also commissioned its new switching centre in the coal city, the capital of Enugu State with Gov. Sullivan Chime of Enugu state commending Celtel for choosing the State for the switch and assured of his government’s readiness to protect telecommunications facilities due to the important role it plays in the lives of the people and Enugu citizens in particular.
