Nokia, leading phone manufacturer, has emerged the ‘Coolest Phone Brand’ at the maiden edition of The BusinessDay Generation Next Survey Awards held in Lagos last week.

The Nokia brand was awarded on the strength of its ability to produce cool, colourful and functional smartphones, as well as engaging the youth market through trendy social activities.

The Award is organized by BusinessDay Media in partnership with HDI Youth Marketeers Nigeria, a youth marketing company with a specialized focus on connecting brands to their target

audience within the youth segment through research, insight generation, creation & management of platform, activations and events.

Nokia’s choice as recipient of the award is the result of a market survey among Nigerians aged between eight and twenty five (8-25 years).

The survey polled respondents on what phone brand they considered to be ‘the coolest.’ Nokia beat Apple, Blackberry and Samsung to the coveted prize.

Speaking on the achievement, Nick Imudia, managing director Nokia West and Central Africa, said, “We are very happy to receive this award. We appreciate our customers across Nigeria and the organizers for honoring Nokia. At Nokia, we strive to make great mobile products tha connect our consumers to what matters most. Through our vibrant range of Asha and Lumia phones, we bring consumers freedom of choice in colour, design, feature set and price range.

"We believe this is resonating strongly in the youth market, as highlighted by this fantastic award.”

Nokia is not only creating devices for our customers to purchase, but also creating opportunities for them to engage with their phones and with the Nokia brand. Last year, we introduced the Nokia Asha range of smartphones targeted at the youth market. As part of our marketing around Asha, we launched a local rap competition for aspiring young rappers to express themselves.

By understanding our consumers, we are able to create marketing initiatives that are relevant, creative and encourage a dialogue with our consumers.

The Generation Next Awards are the biggest and most prestigious awards with focus on the youth market in Africa. Although this is the inaugural year for the awards in Nigeria, they have already been held nine times in South Africa.

They are highly rated as a mouthpiece of the consumer as they are backed by surveys.

According to a statement from the HDI Youth Marketeers Nigeria office, the award seeks to connect and create affinity between brands and their youth market in Africa.
