NPA Empowers Over 200 People in Inyisi Ikeduru, Imo State
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA ) has donated good and items to over 200 people at Umuoziri Inyisi, Ikeduru LGA of Imo State as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, geared towards equipping Nigerian youths in the communities, with vocational and life skills that would create wealth and support livelihood.
Speaking at the presentation of items to the good people of Umuoziri Inyisi, Hadiza Bala Usman, managing director, Nigerian Ports Authority, who was represented by Mr. Ikechukwu Onyemekara, principal Manager, Corporate/Strategic Communication in the Organisation, expressed the institution’s unwavering commitment to positively impact lives and give back to society.
According to her, ‘’ the Nigerian Ports Authority is the regulatory body for all the ports in Nigeria and as a federal government agency, the Authority is deliberate about contributing to the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to drastically reduce the number of people who live in abject poverty in our country. The presentation we are having is in furtherance of this determination.
‘’ I am hopeful that these items, which include electrical grinding machines, sewing machines, and hand grinding machines will go a long way in putting food on the table for people in the community.
“We also hope that once beneficiaries get to work with these items, they would be able to take care of the basic needs of life that were hitherto problematic.’’ She stated
She noted that Nigerian Ports Authority is particularly interested in the empowerment of women and the youth giving the importance of the assistance that they can give to our fathers in the upbringing of children and the maintenance of our families while in the case of the youth, it is important that they have some work at hand at every material time so that they will not be tempted to engage in anti-social activities.
Concerning the items being presented; she said ‘’the Authority had taken particular note of people with skills and those without skills.
This is why we have Sewing machines, which will be distributed to people who have learned the trade. The grinding machines are meant for women and youths who have not acquired these skills.’’
She congratulated the beneficiaries, and commend them to make judicious use of the items because ‘’we have had instances of people who sell the items given to them immediately after handover; I want to appeal that you do not do this.
“On the contrary, please hold on to your items and make the best use of them to assist in keeping your families and community together”.
The traditional ruler of Inyisi Autonomous Community Eze Andrew Osuji applauded NPA for initiating such a laudable programme to benefit the youths of the community. The visibly excited monarch also urged the beneficiaries to make appropriate use of the items
Earlier, in his welcome address, the president-general of the community, Ass. Prof. Richard C. Ihejirika thanked the Managing Director of the NPA, Hadiza Bala Usman, for this wonderful gesture to the people of his community.
According to him “from all indications, it is like God visited the community in the likeness of men to liberate the people of the community from poverty and destitution”
He said, “the men that epitomize God in this context are no other persons than the managing director of the NPA, Hadiza Bala Usman and her team”.
According to him, it is obvious that Ms. Hadiza Bala Usman may have heard of Umuoziri community as to know the social and economic status of the community.
The president-general further said that the community leadership had never known Hadiza Bala Usman before now and there is no way the community would have dreamt of what she can do especially with regards to empowering the youths and the less privileged persons in the community.
According to him, “the leadership and people of the community expresses their profound gratitude to President Mohammadu Buhari and Ms, Hadiza Bala Usman for their uncommon gesture”.
He also added, “Ms. Usman, Ma, on behalf of the Umuoziri community. I wish to pledge our unalloyed support for your office, the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) and the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has filed a lawsuit against the Nigerian government the 36 states over the Cybercrimes (Amendment) Act 2024.
SERAP is arguing that “the repressive use of the Cybercrimes (Amendment) Act 2024 by the government to criminalize legitimate expression violate the human rights of Nigerians, including activists, journalists, bloggers and social media users”.
In a statement on Sunday, Kolawole Oluwadare, deputy director, SERAP, explained that the suit was filed to stop the Tinubu administration and Nigeria’s 36 governors from using the Cybercrimes (Amendment) Act 2024 to criminalize legitimate expression and punish Nigerians, including social media users.
He said: “Rather than using the amended legislation to make cyberspace and its users safer, Nigerian authorities are routinely weaponizing it to curb Nigerians’ human rights and media freedom.
“The suit no: ECW/CCJ/APP/03/2025 was filed last week before the ECOWAS Court in Abuja.”
Recall that Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court had on March 25, 2022, declared Section 24 of Nigeria’s original Cybercrimes Act 2015 as “arbitrary, vague, and repressive.”
The court ordered Nigeria to repeal the provision, citing non-compliance with human rights obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
Although the Cybercrimes (Amendment) Act 2024 repealed Section 24, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) argues that the reworded provisions still infringe upon freedom of expression and information.
SERAP’s concerns center around the ambiguity of “causing a breakdown of law and order” in Section 24(1)(b), which they believe threatens peaceful and legitimate expression and leaves room for abuse.
SERAP highlighted several instances where the law was allegedly misused to target government critics, including activist Dele Farotimi, journalist Agba Jalingo, and social media user Chioma Okoli.
The organization emphasized that the amended legislation has a chilling effect on human rights and media freedom.
SERAP stressed that the amended Act contravenes international human rights law, which requires restrictions on freedom of expression to serve a legitimate purpose and be strictly proportionate.
The organization seeks a declaration that Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Amendment) Act 2024 is unlawful and an order directing the government to repeal or amend the legislation in compliance with international standards.
However, a hearing date has not been set for the suit.

The website of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), www.nigerianstat.gov.ng, has remained offline for three weeks following a cyber attack that compromised its operations.
As at 12am today (Friday), attempts to access the site returned an error message, indicating the page is still inaccessible.
The breach was initially confirmed by the NBS on December 18, 2024, in an announcement made on social media platform X.
In the statement, the bureau urged the public to disregard any information published on its website until further notice, signaling ongoing efforts to recover from the attack.
The hacking incident occurred shortly after the NBS released its Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey on December 17, which revealed alarming statistics about crime in Nigeria.
The survey indicated that Nigerians paid a staggering N2.23 trillion in ransom over a year, from May 2023 to April 2024, and that 51.89 million crime incidents were reported across the country. The northwest region recorded the highest number of incidents, while the southeast had the least.
The day after the report’s publication, rumors surfaced that the Department of State Services (DSS) had summoned Adeniran Adeyemi, the Statistician-General of the Federation, for questioning regarding the survey. However, the NBS promptly denied these claims, clarifying that no such invitation or arrest had taken place.
Despite the confirmation of the hack, the NBS has not provided any additional updates on the restoration of its website or disclosed any developments regarding the breach.
