NUC Builds Data on Nigerian Varsities

The National Universities Commission (NUC) said it had concluded plans to commence Data Base for all Nigerian Universities.
Prof. Julius Okojie, executive secretary, NUC said the exercise would be carried out in collaboration with GUCCI Chis Ltd, a consulting firm.
He said the data base would provide a repository of information that would give accurate statistics of students, academic and non-academic members of staff in Nigerian universities.
The data base, according to the commission, is expected to deliver complete academic records for Nigerian university graduates both past and present.
“The NUCDB project will amongst other things, deliver complete academic records for Nigerian university graduates both past and present, automation of result gathering for present and future undergraduates,” he said.
Mr. Olumide Owolabi of GUCCI, Chis Ltd as saying that “when there is no record, then unaccredited universities will spring up, unqualified lecturers will be hired, learning facilities will not match the teeming student populace.
“Cultism will be rampant, regulation will be non-existent and everything that should work will not just be available.’’
He added that the project would assist government in planning, especially in the distribution of research aids and allocation of resources to each university.
“The project will enable NUC to enforce and check some of its educational policies like the Student to Lecturer ratio.
“It will also assist NUC to give accurate analysis of the comparative performance of students in all higher institutions.
“It will ensure the collation of relevant data and submission of validated records in a timely fashion,” it said.
