Professor Sola Aderounmu Emerges New NCS President

Members of the Nigeria Computer Society ‎(NCS) have elected Professor Sola Aderounmu as their new president (2015-2017).

Although there were initially protests over some provisions of the new Electoral Guidelines released barely three days‎ to the elections, but the NEC and members reached compromise before proceeding with the elections.

Prof. Aderounmu pulled 88 votes to defeat Mr. Chris Uwaje who gave good account of himself rallying 62 votes.

The incoming president takes over from Professor David Adewumi, whose tenure in office expires this year.

Prof. Aderounmu,‎a fellow of the Nigeria Computer Society is also the director, Information Technology and Communications Unit of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The astute computer scientist with professional accomplishments has promised to pursue various agenda to reposition NCS for the benefits of IT practitioners, the academia and the nation at large‎.

He is to be deputised by Mrs. Veronica Owolabi who garnered 105 votes to defeat Mr. Emmanuel Emecheta who got 44‎ votes.

Top on his agenda is to lead NCS to the path of more advocacy; research and development in IT and establishing physical presence for the Society.

He said that NCS will pursue various programmes to engender IT penetration in rural areas and the use of indigenous software.

According to him, NCS will make case for the establishment of Software Development Commission (SDC) as part of efforts to position the country as the IT hub in Africa and aid e-Governance approach through IT support systems.

Prof. Aderounmu added that capacity building among members is a sine qua non‎ in achieving the set goals, therefore, NCS will introduce computer based testing tools to assist organisations, the Government and even the general public.

He said that the NEC under his leadership will work towards increased membership, increased membership due collection and open channels for willful donations nd employment creation for the teaming Nigerian youths.

Background:
Aderounmu‎ holds B.Sc (hons) in Computer Engineering, M.Sc in Computer Science and Ph.D in Computer Science, all from the famous Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State.

He is an active member‎ of the Computer Professional (Registration Council) of Nigeria (CPN); member, Nigerian Society of Engineers (mNSE), and member, Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

His professional accomplishments/grants/Awards and contributions ‎to the IT development in Nigeria include, but not limited to African Centre of Excellence World Bank grant (institutions) for OAU ICT Driven Knowledge Park; TEFund Research Grant; ETF group research grant; among others.
