Plans have reached advanced stage for a China-based information and technology firm, Spur Group, to establish a multi-million dollar manufacturing plant in Nigeria. All things being equal, the company intends to produce computer hard and software.
The investment drive being facilitated by the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology in conjunction with the Nigeria Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), would not only encourage local content but would also lead to production of cheaper and affordable computes systems and its accessories.
Mr. Yang Ming, general manager and leader of the Chinese firm’s representatives, told journalists at the end of the business meeting held with the Mrs. Grace Ekpiwhre, minister of Science and Technology, officials of NIPC, Prof. Cleopas Angaye, director-general of NITDA, that Nigeria has vast market for IT and the investment climate friendly to hardware production which is presently non-existent in the country.
Ming said his company decided to invest in Nigeria because of the cordial investment climate and similarities in developmental challenges of the two countries.
He explained that Spur Group, one of the three top IT firms spearheading e-government IT enterprises in China, has a foothold in South Africa and other parts of the world.
At the meeting, Mrs Ekpiwhre told the Chinese investors to consider Nigerian environment by producing solar-powered computer systems for the country, adding that e-government initiative was put in place primary to manage government information using modern information technology to reduce administrative bottlenecKs and increase efficiency.
