Starcomms, Etisalat, MTN Race for Main One Bandwidth

Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) operator, Starcomms, Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) operators, MTN and Etisalat are among the ten telecommunications players that have subscribed to bandwidth service of Main One Cable before its commercial launch, Nigeria CommunicationsWeek has learnt.
Main One is one of the three undersea cable projects that are landing in the Nigeria; others are Glo 1 and West Africa Cable System. Main One is the first to start commercial rollout of service as it launched its service last week.
Nigeria CommunicationsWeek investigations revealed that contrary to speculation that MTN and Etisalat have acquired equity in the MainStreet Technology the company that owns Main One cable, the two operators only subscribed to bandwidth services coming from the stable of Main One cable early before it landed in Lagos.
Bandwidth is the width of the range or band of frequencies that an electronic signal uses on a given transmission medium. It is expressed in terms of the difference between the highest-frequency signal component and the lowest-frequency signal component. Since the frequency of a signal is measured in hertz -the number of cycles of change per second, a given bandwidth is the difference in hertz between the highest frequency the signal uses and the lowest frequency it uses. A typical voice signal has a bandwidth of approximately three kilohertz (3 kHz); an analog television (TV) broadcast video signal has a bandwidth of six megahertz (6 MHz) -- some 2,000 times as wide as the voice signal.
Main One is wholly African-owned with a vision to expand the much needed capacity on the African continent and reduce costs of broadband communications across the continent. The 7000km submarine cable system that ran from Portugal to Nigeria has the capacity to transmit 1.92 terabyte per seconds.
