Umo Leads Rotary Mushin, Targets ICT & Other Projects

Rotarian Michael Umo has been installed as the new president of Rotary Club, Mushin Chapter, under District 9110, Lagos.

At the colouful ceremony, Umo, who is also the general manager, Bulk-Post Venture of Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST), promised to make integrate information and communication technologies (ICTs) to educational institutions to be identified by his leadership in Mushin for the benefits of the students.

He said that during 2014/15 Rotary year, the Club has in its literacy and educational projects, the provision of ten (10) computer sets and training of operators after upgrading and fortifying a computer room in a secondary school to be determined by the Club soon.

According to him, Rotary International is notable for its penchant interest in developing the society through philanthropy, respect for human life and promotion of unity among members of the society.

“Our impact starts with our members—people who work tirelessly with their clubs to solve some of our communities' toughest challenges. Their efforts are supported by Rotary International, our member association, and The Rotary Foundation, which turns generous donations into grants that fund the work of our members and partners around the world.  Rotary is led by our members—responsible leaders who help to carry forward our organization's mission and values in their elected roles.

The District Governor represented by Susan Omotosho, added that that each year, gifts to The Rotary Foundation fund thousands of projects around the globe.

She described Mushin-Metro Chapter as distinct in the District due to the members who have been enthusiastic about building lasting legacies in the area.

Omotosho added that the District 9110 was ready to support them in carrying out their projects in the areas of education, health or other chosen projects.

Umo, however, said, the Chapter was ready to support the Rotary Foundation through programme participation and financial contribution and to produce at least four Paul Harris Fellows before the end of the Rotary Year.

Umo listed service projects to be embarked on by the Chapter to include two major areas, namely, education/literacy and healthcare.

On education, he said, "We intend to provide 10 computer sets and training after upgrading and fortifying a computer room. UPS, stabilizers and a generator will provided at the cost of N1.5m.

"There will be upgrading of the laboratories for the school in a three year programme. The laboratories are Physics, chemistry and biology at the cost of N2m.

"On healthcare, we have budgeted N400,000 for the provision of insecticide treated nets, incubators per hospital".

He said they are working on embracing the ICT in their dealings like creation of club website with requisite social media platforms.

Also, Dr. David Ogogo, registrar and chief executive officer, Institute of Capital Market Registrars, lauded Rotary for its humanitarian gestures, particularly in donations to schools, hospital and individuals in the society.

According to him, ICTs in essence, has become indispensable tools to entrench changes in the society.

Ogogo said, “Technology is a critical agent of the contemporary society. We are aware of the mainframe computers used in the past, but the revolution in that sector has transverse every other sector in globally.

“We cannot talk about changing systems, administrations, leaderships or impacting lives without the help of the ICTs. So, when Rotary comes up with projects to donate ICT projects to schools, they are commendable and should be encouraged,” he added.

Meanwhile, the ceremony witnessed by crème de crème of Rotary members, captains of industries and well-wishers, also saw donations made to the course of Rotary Club of Mushin projects for the year.
