VDT Boss Urges Buhari to Retain CommTech Ministry

Mr. Biodun Omoniyi, a notable figure in the country’s ICT sector, has urged General Muhammed Buhari, president-elect, to retain the Federal Ministry of Communication Technology (CommTech), saying that the ministry is key to the incoming government’s goals and agenda.

Omoniyi who is CEO of VDT Communications Limited in a keynote speech at this year’s Beacon of ICT lectures, said that instead of scrapping the Ministry, the incoming government should reposition it for greater impact on the industry and the economy.

“We will continue to engage the incoming government, especially through the Ministry of Communication Technology, because we hope the Ministry will be allowed to continue its leading role in the industry”.

Omoniyi also highlighted that the industry which contributed over seven per cent to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2014, deserves protection and recognition by the incoming administration.

“From the research has shown that with an expected 182 million subscribers at the end of 2019, Nigeria remaining the biggest market for mobile subscription on the African continent is more like an assurance,” he added.

To him, for Nigeria as the largest economy in Africa to continue to play important roles in defining future mobile trends, the relevance of Ministry of Communication Technology cannot be equated.
