The broadband revolution has been talked about for some time.
Now, with the licensing of third generation (3G) in 2007, the reality of what this revolution means for Nigerians is rapidly becoming apparent.
Broadband is a ‘broad bandwidth’ connection, simply, a high-speed data transmission in which a single cable can carry a large amount of data at once.
Though there has been significant improvement in the country’s Internet and broadband sector in recent time, broadband access is not yet commonplace. It is still a luxury of some sort.
That is why most Nigerian businesses have remained at the outskirt of the digital map.
Experts insist that no business, regardless of its size and location, can do without the internet because the web is changing every aspect of lives, but no area is undergoing as rapid and significant a change as the way businesses operate.
The general believe is that as businesses incorporate Internet technology into their core business processes, they start to achieve real value.
That is why; the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said that broadband Internet spread is atop its agenda this year.
According to the NCC, the plan to develop wireless broadband infrastructure in all the 36 states of the federation and Abuja as a way of fast-tracking internet availability and access to all Nigerians is still on course.
Known as State Accelerated Broadband Initiative (SABI), the project would be carried out in partnership with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the country.
The project will ensure that all the state capitals, towns and rural communities have access to the Internet, data and video services through a broadband infrastructure that would be connected to a national backbone.
Government should encourage the use of both fibre optic and wireless solutions like WiMAX to encourage the rapid spread of broadband
Government should also pursue the project with a vigour because apart from connecting Nigeria, broadband also takes the waiting out of the Web and saves users time and hassle due to dialling up and logging on or from having to redial due to busy signals.
For a community broadband aides in attracting and retaining businesses and increasing opportunities to learn outside of the classroom
It also provides the ability to provide additional access to government services, attract tourists and extend their stays, increases both access to, and quality of health care.
For individual users, broadband offers covienience to accomplish everyday task as well as well as wealth of entertainment for most ages
It allows for additional opportunities to search for employment and provides additional means to communicate with friends and family
