Demand for Glo recharge cards has risen sharply across the country in the last few days as prepaid subscribers on the Glo Mobile network seek to take advantage of the 20per cent bonus offer on airtime.
Globacom had at its 5th Anniversary Press Conference on September 3, 2008, announced an offer of 20per cent bonus airtime on every recharge from N500 and above as part of its seven special offers to celebrate five successful years of operation. The airtime bonus offer which is for both new and old prepaid subscribers will last for ten days, that is up until September 13, 2008.
The 20 per cent bonus translates to N100 free airtime for every N500 recharge card denomination and N200 for every N1, 000 recharge card. A subscriber who recharges with the N2, 000 denomination will be given N400 free airtime while the N3,000 recharge denomination attracts N600 free airtime. On the other hand, every N5, 000 recharge attracts a bonus airtime of N1000. The free airtime is for Glo to Glo calls.
Reports say the offer considered as one of the most generous free airtime offers in recent times has elicited excitement among existing and potential subscribers. Globacom sources indicate that several Gloworld shops across the country have recorded very heavy patronage of all the various recharge card denominations.
Shade Boyede, managing director of Gloworld, Globacom’s retail outlet, confirmed the development. "Since the news of the 20% airtime bonus offer broke, we have witnessed a very sharp increase in the demand for recharge cards. Subscribers want to avail themselves of the airtime gift before the offer period lapses," Boyede stated.
Increased interest in Glo recharge cards has also been recorded by GSM dealers. One of the dealers, Mrs. C.L Okeke of Franex Limited, Warri, Delta State, said "Although Glo cards have always been in high demand, we noticed an increase in the last few days."
Another dealer in Abuja, Mohamed Haruna of New Dimension Telecoms, also noted the surge in demand. "We have had to increase our stock order of Glo recharge cards whose demand has risen since last week. I think it is because of the 5th anniversary offers for Glo subscribers," Okulaja added.
In Lagos and Port Harcourt, Rivers State, recharge card vendors also reported higher sales of Glo cards. John Okulaja, a dealer at Falomo in Ikoyi, Lagos, said, "Glo cards are now hot cake. Customers are just asking for Glo. Even the N5,000 denomination which not too many people were buying before because of the high amount now is now selling very well." For Ekaette Ekong, a card seller at Rumukurushi area of Port Harcourt, it is good business with Glo recharge cards. "Business with Glo cards is very good as many people are rushing for the cards because of the promo," an excited Ekong said.
