Dr Tanko Ishaya, head, Centre for Internet Computing at the University of Hull, UK, has assured that the centre would transform Nigeria's education sector.
Ishaya, a visiting lecturer to University of Jos made the observation in Jos at the University's first Distinguished Alumni Lecture.
The lecturer, who is currently the director at University of Jos ICT directorate, spoke on the topic: ‘A Transformational Agent for Education in Nigeria.’'
He said electronic learning (e-learning) supported the teaching and learning processes as practiced in Europe and other parts of the World.
According to him, ‘ICT has a tremendous potential of bringing back the lost educational glory of the country’.
Ishaya disclosed that the web would transform the country’s education through an improved learning curriculum that would lead to new researches.
He said Nigeria's educational operators can leverage on the inexhaustible information on the web and from there get a benchmark.
The lecturer said e-learning was advantageous because it created a powerful and flexible learning system as both teacher and student learn at different paces.
He disclosed that less than one per cent of Nigerians had access to the Internet because of poor infrastructure, inadequate and unreliable power supply and unwillingness to change.
Ishaya, a graduate of Mathematics, said addressing the challenges involved successful e-learning implementation strategies by government and stakeholders.
According to him, ‘ICT has changed the theories of the learning process with a shift in emphasis from content to performance.’
Ishaya said that authorities of the University of Jos planned to commence e-learning process soon.
Prof. Sonni Tyoden, the Vice Chancellor, was represented at the occasion by Prof. Elizabeth Abama, the dean, Students' Affairs. Tyoden expressed happiness with the Alumni for organizing the lecture and assured it of management's partnership.
