Mobil Producing Nigeria [MPN], operator of the NNPC/MPN Joint Venture has awarded scholarship grants to Akwa Ibom State indigenes as part of the oil major’s decade long commitment developing the state through sports.,
The ceremony which was held at Governor’s Office Annex in Uyo, the state capital saw Ms Esther Moffat Utigha from Community Development Agency [CDA] in Eket emerged best athlete in the past three year’s consistently with a cash prize of N55,000 in three events .
MPN also presented cash prizes to about 94 winners of the championship from participating schools in the state while 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners also lined up their pockets with N20,000, N15,000 and N10,000 respectively.
Ms Gloria Essien-Danner, executive directors of the company, said the championship inaugurated about nine year’s ago was targeted at secondary school students in the state with the aim of discovering talents at the grassroots who may be further trained for more sporting pursuits in the future.
She further stressed, the activity was to also complement the national tract and field championships sponsored by Exxon-Mobil upstream subsidiary in Nigeria in the past 20 year’s.
“Today, we in NNPC/MPN Joint Venture are glad to note that this championships event ranks the biggest in the sports calendar of Akwa Ibom State. We are indeed encouraged by the enthusiastic participation by the students and the school authorities, as well as the support and large turn-out from other stakeholders, especially the Akwa Ibom State government” Ms Danner noted.
She appreciated the encouragement and support of the stakeholders as well as the media in the realization of the sporting objective of MPN saying also that, such support formed the factors for the continuous sustainability of the programme over year’s even as the 9th edition of the tournament also commenced yesterday.
While commending the state government for its magnanimity towards the championships by donating N1 million in support of the exercise and the introduction of free and compulsory education in both primary as well as secondary schools in the state maintained, the development combined with sports, would usher a healthy sporting developments and improve academic performance among the young folk.
The company however, donated N1million to the Holy Family Orphanage Home at Ikpe Ikot Nkon in Ini local government area of the state for the construction of a bakery in the area.
