The German Banking Industry Committee has approved a hardware and software solution from Wincor Nixdorf for the processing of cashless payments on Germany's girocard interbank network.

The solution was certified in accordance with the Open Standards for Cards standardization initiative. With approval granted, the company is now piloting its solution at the German service stations of a multinational oil and gas company, according to a press release.

Wincor Nixdorf is managing the project with the goal of standardizing service station payment systems.

The newly approved hardware and software solution connects card terminals at the service stations with a central server at Wincor Nixdorf — the Aevi Pay platform — where the data is processed and forwarded to card acquirers.

This will eliminate the current need for each service station to operate its own server, according to the release.

Wincor Nixdorf will successively connect 15,000 card terminals at the service stations to its Aevi platform.

"With this approval, we can begin immediately to offer a solution for cashless payment transactions on the German market, which is a sizable and important market," said Marc Birkner, general manager of sales and operations for cashless payment solutions at Wincor.

"For our cashless payment solutions business unit, which was only established in 2013, this is another important step toward the internationalization of our business."
