Board members, parents and pupils at the sports arena of Saint Saviour’s school, Ebute Metta, Yaba, Lagos, were at the weekend thrilled by budding athletes the school, who put up fantastic performances during their 21th annual inter-house sports competition.

At the end, Green House was declared the overall winners in the event, which featured pupils from both the nursery and primary sections in various sports events, including athletics, sack race, thug of war among other events.

Green House topped the medals table with a total of 29 medals comprising, 11 gold, 14 silver and four bronze, followed by Yellow House- 11 gold, three silver and 11 bronze medals and Red House- eight gold, nine silver and six bronze medals, while Blue House came fourth with four gold, eight silver and 13 bronze medals.

Deacon Tom Ogboi, the chairman, Board of Management  of St. Saviour’s School, Ebute-Metta, Lagos State, while speaking at the competition venue, said that the inter-house sports competition has always been organized annually to encourage the pupils discover their talents in sports, while pursuing their educational career among other activities.

“I am delighted that once again Saint Saviour’s has successfully organized the school inter- house sports for 21 years now. The event is part of the school’s commitment to discover young talents and groom them to continue giving their best in their chosen sports,’’ he said.

He advised parents to continue to encourage their wards in taking part in sports, describing it as a tool to promote discipline and hard work while studying.

Barrister Kola Olapoju, chairman of the Occasion, who handed the champions trophy to the winning house among jubilation, commended the students for their outstanding displays in the championship.

There was also old pupils’, parents’ and teaching and non-teaching staff races, both in the male and female categories with the winners also smiling home with medals and tropes.

According to Mrs. Ailsa Griffiths, the head teacher, who described sport as one of the ways to create a promising future for a child, said that the vision and mission anchored on ‘…being the best’, through bonding among the school authorities, the parents and the pupils.

“St. Saviour's School Ebute Metta, is a Trust School that caters for children from Nursery to Primary 6 and delivers the Nigerian Curriculum as part of a thoroughly rounded education, preparing children to become global citizens, competing in an international environment and using sport to prepare them for the future is also good,” she said.

Saint Saviour’s
St. Saviour’s School, Ebute-Metta was founded by the Colonial Church School’s Trust, established by St. Saviour’s colonial Council at the inspiration of Canon R.A. Wright.

The school opened on April 23, 1951 in the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) Compound with four classrooms and a capacity for one hundred children.

However, the School has extended its capacity by providing more classrooms, a computer room, a science laboratory, and a well-equipped library, as well as Art room.

The population of the school is currently over five hundred and fifty pupils, as new facilities have been added such as interactive white board in all classrooms, new play equipment, among other, achievement recognized both locally and internationally.
