With the power of the internet, Africa could make its mark in the world stage, said, Ms. Funke Opeke, chief executive officer of MainOne Company (www.mainone.net/cloud).
She made the remark while featuring in the documentary, “Four Stories”, alongside other personalities with huge developmental impact such as Jeff Immelt (General Electric), Janet Nkubana and Joy Ndungutse (Gahaya Links) and Amadou Fall (NBA Africa).
Bloomberg Philanthropies recently joined with the United States Department of Commerce to host the 2nd U.S.-Africa Business Forum.
The event brought together Heads of State and business leaders to discuss the opportunity to grow the commercial ties between Africa and the United States.
Speaking in the documentary, Opeke said that her decision to come back home (Nigeria) after two decades in the United State of America was borne out of the desire to give back to the country and Continent at large.
Opeke said that the country (Nigeria) has “so much” potentials, especially, among the young people, with same needs and aspirations as in other societies.
She said that such need to “get the youths online (daily) to leverage the opportunities in the immediate and global communities”, spurred the establishment of MainOne Company.
Opeke launched MainOne in 2010 to provide high speed internet access to West Africa; the submarine cable system now runs down the cost and connects eight (8) countries and millions of people.
She said, however, “There are still so much works to be done”. According to the MainOne CEO, “It is when the internet is available to every child; when it is no longer a privilege to have access, “then, the mission would have been accomplished”.
Since its launch in 2010, MainOne has developed a reputation for highly reliable services to become the preferred provider of wholesale Internet services to major telecom operators, ISPs, government agencies, large enterprises, and educational institutions in West Africa.
MainOne’s world class submarine cable system running down the coast of West Africa, state of the art IP NGN network, growing regional and metro terrestrial fiber optic networks, and data center facilities enable broadband services for businesses needing online connectivity solutions in West Africa.
