‘Project One Million Jobs’, a platform created for one million youths with ICT related skills to work virtually from anywhere in the world and earn a living, has gone.
The platform was initiated Akachi Nwoke, chief executive officer of Emerald TV, to provide a one stop global virtual ICT hub.
Speaking to Nigeria CommunicationsWeek, Nwoke said that jobs will become available to professionals like web designers, mobile app developers, graphic editors, animators, software developers, copywriters, analysts, social media professionals, voice over artists, translators, speechwriters, news writers, PR Executives, etc, from December 1, 2016, although, the platform has opened to registrants.
He said, “Emerald TV believes in the Power that One job has. We believe Just one job can sustain a family of eight in Africa. We believe just one job means a mother doesn’t have to sell her daughter into marriage. We believe just one job means a young man has something better to do than join a gang. Now take the positive impact of just one job, and multiply that by a million! This is a platform where workmen meet work”.
Procedures
He said that the clientele base is not limited to Nigeria, but the workforce will be based in Nigerians. “The whole idea is for them to work virtually from any part of the country. There is no special skill required except you have to be knowledgeable on ICT tools. For instance, if you can design a website, develop mobile app or animator, you can actually go to www.1mjobs.org and subscribe. Once you upload your profile by December 1, the work flow will start.
Difference from other platform
“This is basically designed for jobs in ICT or for those with such skill sets. Secondly, LinkedIn and other platforms do not get you jobs, but we are saying sign up from whatever location in Nigeria and we will get job for you.
Is the job automatic?
“The jobs are not automatic. Your duty is to register, ours is to get the job pushed to you. The platform is not subscription based; just sign up. The platform opened today (Tuesday) and with the number of subscriptions already we will hit the one million mark in a month time, which is the benchmark we set for ourselves so that work starts by December 1.
Pre-Test to Determine Qualifications
“There is a sort of pre-test; we want to have the biography as means of primary identification of the ‘staff’ we are working with. We want to be sure they can actually live up to expectations. As the applications trickle in we shall be reviewing them. It is actually an automated system, but we have a back end functions. The clients are already dropping jobs on the website. We want to officially launch.
Sustainability
“As an ICT and media company, the sustainability of this project is assured. We have offices we leveraged to market for the jobs be assigned to us. We have been doing that internally; it is now open to the community. The jobs are expected to come from United States and Europe, because ICT jobs are still cheap in Africa”.
Also speaking at the project launch, Oyidiya Oyika Alfred, MD, New Global Access Partners (N-Gap), urged the young people to leverage opportunities Project One Million platform provides.
“Unfortunately, bad things thrive more online. However, people are positively impacting the world via the social media; you only need to push more and be smart. There must be a way to make people buy into your product and services. So, beyond working harder you need to be smart on social media. This project has provided a better option for job seekers to prove their worth”, she said calling on the government to revive comatose industries as channels for job creation.
