United States Mission in Nigeria has warned visa applicants against submitting forged or misleading documents, stressing that suspected fraud cases may be escalated to relevant US government agencies.
The mission issued the warning in a post on its official X account as part of its ongoing #VisaWiseTravelSmart campaign, which seeks to educate Nigerians and other applicants on the US visa application process.
According to the mission, consular officers do more than reject applications when they identify fraudulent documents or information that raises security concerns.
“When consular officers detect fraudulent documents in a visa application or uncover information suggesting an individual may be a potential threat, we immediately alert all appropriate U.S. government agencies,” the mission said.
It added that agencies coordinate to protect national security and prevent criminals and other potential threats from entering the United States.
The warning means applicants who submit fake bank statements, employment letters, travel records or other supporting documents could face consequences beyond the rejection of their visa applications.
Information uncovered during the visa process may be shared with relevant US law enforcement and security agencies where necessary, particularly when authorities identify potential security threats or fraudulent activity.
The US Mission has repeatedly urged Nigerians applying for tourist, business, student or immigrant visas to provide truthful information and genuine supporting documents throughout the application process.
Applicants are also expected to ensure that information provided on their visa forms is accurate and consistent with their supporting documents.
The latest warning highlights the importance of transparency throughout the visa process, particularly as applicants face increasing scrutiny of information submitted to support their applications.
The mission advised applicants to avoid fraudulent documentation and misleading claims, noting that such actions could negatively affect their current application and potentially their ability to obtain a US visa in the future.
