Mr. Stephen Ibe, managing director and chief executive officer of Stephens Global Services limited, has called on the federal government to approve the new postal bill for courier operators.
According to Ibe, Nigeria Postal Services (Nipost) being the national carrier in the postal sector and also regulating the courier industry, is unhealthy for the industry.
“There is the need for an independent regulatory body for the courier industry, to enable proper control of activities in the sector, for this reason the approval of the new postal bill by the federal government is expedient,” he said.
Mr. Ibe was of the opinion that the Courier Regulatory Department (CRD) of Nipost which is saddled with the responsibility of sanitizing and controlling the courier industry is handicapped and cannot operate better than it is doing at the moment without the new postal bill.
He pointed out that illegal operators in the courier industry are a menace to the registered ones and also a threat to the national security of the country.
Furthermore, he explained that with what obtains in the industry now, operators can bring in prohibited materials into the country and do a lot more illicit businesses without being noticed.
