Parastatals in the aviation industry have undertaken a series of measures to ensure a zero accident record including comprehensive, safety and security initiatives.

These were undertaken following the federal government’s determination to ensure that the right lessons were learnt from the Dana Air crash.

Princess Stella Oduah, minister of Aviation, said that over 90 per cent of the report of the technical and administrative review panel on domestic airlines has been implemented at the unveiling of a cenotaph in memory of the victims.

The panel report emphasized the need to strengthen air navigation and meteorological infrastructure and the review of the 2001 Nigeria Civil Aviation Policy (NCAP) as well as the 2006 Civil Aviation Act.

The minister stated that institutional reforms undertaken after the incident includes policy, regulatory, legal, human capacity development and economic reforms and initiatives to enhance safety and security standards in the country.

According to Yakubu Dati, general manager, Corporate Communications, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and spokesman of the Agencies, other safety initiatives undertaken by the government aimed at improving air safety infrastructure according to the minister were in the area of Meteorological services and infrastructure, communication, navigation and surveillance as well as accident investigation.

Another major key aspect of the reforms according to the Minister involves the remodelling of terminal buildings, construction of new international terminal buildings including perishable cargo terminals and the development of aerotropolis not only to enhance safety but to improve the economic well being of Nigerians across the country.
