Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) has pledged its determination at ensuring an effective electric power reform for Nigeria.
Christopher Anyanwu, director general of the bureau who stated this at the second leg of the workshop on electric power market rules for stakeholders, organised by the Bureau in Lagos, maintained that because of the desire to have an acceptable power reform in the country, the Bureau sought the best to help in the reform, including the design of the market rules.
Anyanwu, therefore, charged all power sector participants, operators and stakeholders to take maximum advantage of the workshop to achieve the purpose.
The objectives of the workshop include to increase awareness of the market rules, explain the rules and bring clarity to their application and implementation, provide a forum for the successor companies and other stakeholders to express their concerns and subsequently resolve issues regarding market rules and provide the successor companies and stakeholders with support for the successful implementation of the market rules.
Anyanwu, represented by his Special Assistant, Yunana Jackdell Malo, explained that the aims of the market rules are to establish and govern an efficient, competitive, transparent and reliable market for the sale and purchase of wholesale electricity and auxiliary services in Nigeria.
"The rules provide guideline for efficient operation of the electricity market in order to achieve the desired goals of increased competition and grid operating efficiencies, increased and improved service delivery, reliability and affordability and improved utilization of capacity in energy generation", he said.
In her remarks, Ms Bolanle Onagoruwa, director of Electric Power at BPE,, explained that it was an interactive forum to cross-fertilize ideas to better understand the market rules.
It would be recalled that President Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua approved the market rules in February 2009, making it necessary for successor companies and stakeholders to come together to discuss and understand the implications and impact of the market rules.
The Lagos workshop, co-ordinated by Mercados Energy Markets International, has participants drawn from Eko, Ikeja, Ibadan, Benin and Egbin.
The earlier workshop held at Enugu drew participants from Port Harcourt, Afam, Sapele, Ughelli and Enugu.)
