Pragmatic policies and people with adequate managerial core-competences are needed to rejuvenating the billion naira Courier, Logistics and Transport industry; crucial to diversifying Nigeria’s economy.
This was one of the primary reasons the Courier and Logistics Management Institute (CLMI) is partnering with tertiary institutions in Nigeria and overseas to develop human talents to lead the sector, especially with the uptake of e-commerce.
The Chairman of CLMI, Dr. Simon Emeje, made these remarks in Lagos on the forthcoming investiture, awards and book presentation holding on April 12, 2018 at Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.
Accordingly, the Institute has perfected plans for the commencement of award of Degrees (both BSc and MSc) and Peofessional Diloma by partner-universities and Polytechnic within and outside Nigeria in Courier and Logistics Management; Courier and Transport Management.
Dr. Emeje said, “The Institute is the first of its kind in the whole world, having focus on courier, logistics, transport and management.
“There is no Institute of the magnitude across the globe that combines the four key areas.
“The closest is on logistics and transport. We are here to fill that gap.
“So far, there is no Degree or HND awarding Institute with this combination.
“We are here as pioneers in collaboration with Universities, both within and outside Nigeria.
“The Degrees/HND will be awarded in Courier and Logistics Management; Courier and Transport Management.
“We are collaborating with Universities because our license does not permit us to award Degree/HND certificates.
“However, we can run professional programmes”.
He added that, so far, in liaising with the Universities, CLMI has developed a curriculum from first year to the fifth year for the undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the field, adding that economic prospects in the industry are many.
“World over, every human being is covered by these four areas- Courier, Logistics, Management and Transport (CLMI).
“Most times, people are not conscious of the operations in these areas. We are trying to ignite that in Nigerians.
“So, we want people to know these are areas you can professionalise; that is, you are made to do things better.
“Courier is time sensitive which is applicable in every aspect of our endeavours either virtual or physical.
“Logistics will tell you how to process goods, store and distribute them to the lastmile (end user).
“Management entails control, directing and making adequate decisions that will harness resources for favourable results.
“In Transport, after you have put all these together, you need to move them- the network of distribution of the product from one place to another.
“These are strategic areas of every human life.”
On the forthcoming investiture, the Chairman disclosed the theme as “Courier and Logistics Management in National Economies”, with Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode as host; Barrister (Dr) Adebayo Shittu, Honourable Minister of Communications as chairman of Investiture ceremony; Barrister Bisi Adegbuyi, Postmaster General of the Federation/CEO as Special Guest of Honour; Professor Albert Veenstra, Professor of Logistics (Netherlands) as Guest Speaker, Professor Charles Ayo(former Vice Chancellor of Covenant University) as the book Reviewer, amongst other dignitaries.
On his part, Dr Sheidu Olanrewaju, the Institute’s Registrar & member of the Governing Council, said these were part of measures to correct anomalies in the industry which has the capacity to generate millions of jobs.
“As an Institute, we discovered that things aren’t done properly within the value chain; CLMI is out to correct them.
“This is not just about certification, rather, it is acquiring the right skill to manage courier, logistics and transportation businesses”, he added.”
Mr. Frank Atirene, A Council Member, said the Institute has further developed professional programs with first batch of awards- Graduate/Student, Associate, Member, Fellow, Corporate Member, Corporate Fellow, carefully selected among practitioners who have demonstrated professionalism over the years.
