Justice Adebayo Yusuf of the Kwara State High Court, Ilorin, has sentenced one David Ogundele, to death by hanging for killing Abiola Ashinwo, an employee of MTN.
Ashinwo, who was the convict’s girlfriend, was stabbed to death with a knife by Ogundele on April 25, 2016.
Ogundele was found guilty and convicted on two counts of attempt to commit culpable homicide by stabbing Ashinwo with a knife and culpable homicide by stabbing her to death.
Justice Yusuf found the convict guilty of the offences contrary to sections 229 and 221 of the Penal Code Law.
The judge held that the prosecution had been able to prove the case of culpable homicide against Ogundele by calling four witnesses and tendering exhibits, including a sharp knife, a pair of rubber slippers, photographs of the deceased, a Toyota Camry car and statement made by the convict to prove his case.
For the first offence, the convict was sentenced to 25 years in jail, and death by hanging for the second.
Mr Abdulmumini Jimoh, police prosecutor, quoted the convict as saying in his confessional statement that he visited the victim in her parents’ house and met her and her mother, and that an argument later ensued and he stabbed her and her mother.
Justice Yusuf held that the convict, through his confessional statement, had convicted himself.
