Engineer Saleh Dunoma, managing director, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), has enjoined all stakeholders in the Aviation Industry to be actively involved in the awareness and fight against cancer.

According to the managing director, “FAAN is looking forward to partnering with the National Cancer Society and other relevant bodies towards combating this disease”.

Dunoma who was represented by Barrister Ikechi Uko, director of Administration, made this remark recently in MMIA, Lagos during the Customer Service Appreciation/ World Cancer Day organised by the Servicom Unit of the Authority.

The MD further called for care and support without discrimination for those affected with cancer. “In our fight against cancer, we must ensure that we do not promote fear and victimisation”.

Also speaking at the occasion, Dr. Oduwole, general manager, Aviation Medical Clinic, disclosed that cancer could be caused by various habits such as: tobacco smoking, tobacco chewing, excessive alcoholic consumption and several other factors such as over exposure to sunlight, irritants such as hydrocarbon, insecticides etc.

He therefore advised against these habits and a daily breast examination for women in order to detect lumps, swellings and dimpling found in the breasts.

Dr. Morenike Olatunji of the Aviation Medical Clinic also in a lecture on the subject, listed breast cancer, prostate cancer, oral cancer, lung cancer and liver cancer as the major types of cancer.

She defined cancer as an uncontrollable growth of abnormal cells which could occur in any part of the body.

She pointed out that this disease is the leading cause of death all over the world and stated that the best cure for it is prevention by all means and early detection.

The Airport Manager, MMIA, Mr. Nathaniel Auta who was also at the event explained that it is imperative for everyone to be aware of this disease, its effects and strive to prevent it.

Meanwhile, Engr. Dunoma also highlighted the Aviation Minister’s strategies geared towards repackaging, rebranding and redirecting the aviation industry towards a high and effective customer service delivery.

According to him “these strategies emphasis the improvements in customer service aimed at satisfying our customers, stakeholders and other airport users in line with best practices.

Also in her address, Mrs. Ebele Okoye, general manager Servicom, disclosed that the Servicom Department of the Authority while marking the Customer Service Appreciation Day chose 4th of February, 2015 being the World Cancer Day stress the importance of good quality service delivery in the aviation industry.

Other officials who attended the event include: Engr. Femi Ogunode, Director of Maintenance and Engineering, Mr. Aromiruwa, Regional Manager, some senior officers of the organisation, officials from Aviation Medical Clinic and Port Health Services.
