Hussain Halilu Pai, secretary for education, Federal Capital Territory has threatened to sack teachers in the FCT’s employment who are without IT knowledge.
He gave this warning while speaking at the 55th session of the national council on education held in Abuja.
Pai explained that to make teaching effective, it is necessary for the teachers to be computer literate, adding that three months is okay to acquire computer knowledge.
He said that the FCT administration has so far, trained 409 teachers and has made provisions in the 2009 budget of N100 million to extend the inter-class computer programme to junior secondary schools in the capital territory.
He said the world is now a global village where every teacher must conform by being computer literate. “The old system is now over for a new one.”
Goke Adegoroye, permanent secretary, Federal Ministry of Education stressed the need for capacity building for the inspectors of education, as well as intensive training and on computer courses for the 750 inspectors of education and the supervisors of all the six-geo political zones in the country.
He said that the new initiative - Students Tutoring, Mentoring and Counseling Programme (Stumec) is aimed at improving learning, achievement and retention in school; while advocating for e-learning in secondary and tertiary institutions.
