Dr Gloria Elemo, Director-General, Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO), has lamented lack of academic recognition for the research works of FIIRO researchers as well as inadequate incentives which has forced many researchers to abandon the institute for lucrative appointments in international agencies, countries and universities.
She stated this during a visit by the Senate Committee on Science and Technology to seek the consideration of professorship cadre for researchers of the institute to stem brain drain.
“Our researchers are being attracted by international bodies and countries. South Africa is a major culprit. We have a large number of Nigerians in the Diaspora. We should do something to improve remuneration.
“Also appointment of research professors in research institutes would help to retain them. We are appealing that our people should be able to attain research professorship here. Presently, at most they retire as Chief Research Officers,” she said.
Responding, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, chairman of the committee, advised the institute to approach the National Universities Commission (NUC) as well as affiliate with universities to offer programmes that would enable researchers to fulfill the teaching role that contributes to their elevation to the professorship cadre.
“There are two ways to get it done. The direct way is that you can apply to a university and get affiliation and maybe you offer one or two courses. I did at NASDRA (National Space Research and Development Agency). They are going to teach two or three courses in affiliation with the African University of Science and Technology, Abuja.
“You can get this done by working with the universities and the National Universities Commission (NUC). The laboratories here are better than those in most universities. But don’t bite more than you can chew. Don’t choose too many courses,” he said.
Boroffice also urged the institute to lead the drive to diversify the economy by commercialising its research products through partnership with the private sector.
“FIIRO has a role to play in the diversification of the economy. I am happy you have a relationship with the private sector. I would advise you to intensify your training on the adoption of your technology by SMEs.
“I think packaging is very important. I really appreciate your effort in this area to establish a packaging centre that can help us package our products. By now we should have canned Zobo. If we can package Zobo very well there is no reason we cannot export it,” he said.
Boroffice also promised to support the institute’s research on local production of artificial hair extension, which its researchers said would cost about N500million to research.
Other Senators on the committee, Obina Ogba, and Yusuf A. Yusuf, also praised the institute’s efforts, particularly its auditorium, which they described as one of a kind in Nigeria.
The lawmakers were conducted on a tour of the institute’s facilities. They also went into a closed-door session with its management to discuss its budget.
