Ahmadu Giade, chairman /chief executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has described the illicit drug business as a very serious business but however assured that the agency is prepared and competent to confront the monster.
Giade made the disclosure recently when he briefed the press on the country’s effort as well as latest trends in drug trafficking and said that the operations of the agency in fighting the drug war have been very eventful and memorable as the agency apprehended a number of notable and influential drug barons who the agency felt should be in the public knowledge..
The chairman frowned at attempts by undesirable individuals to circulate documents round media houses aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the agency. Giade noted that while his agency is receiving commendations for their success stories in the drug war, drug barons are in pains especially when the NDLEA officers are not compromising their avowed determination to combat the illicit drug business, they devise other ways of perpetrating their crime which he said included jail evasion cartel and campaign of calumny to tarnish the image of the agency. Giade maintained that the agency will never be cowed by the efforts of the drug baron to disparage the activities of his agency.
Further, he acknowledged the cooperation of his agency with the International Criminal Police Organization (ICPO-Interpol) which has enabled it to arrest an international drug syndicate known as Goodluck Omah who also goes by other James Nnamdi, Ugo Chima etc .
Giade lamented the shoddy manner the Justice Gilbert Obayan Committee charged to identify the major factors militating against effective operations in the agency and to make recommendations, did its work. He said that throughout the six months period of the committee’s sitting that it did not visit any of the agency’s offices to identify those problems militating against the performance of the agency and that even when the report of the committee is said to have been written, his agency is yet to receive a copy
Giade explained the jail evasion cartel in the drug business and stated that it was the NDLEA that uncovered the scandal in 2006 where it was discovered that some drug convicts were never found to have gotten to the prison after the courts had convicted them. Upon this disclosure, Giade said he directed that all drug suspects sentenced between 2005 and 2006 be investigated to confirm if they had actually served their full jail terms. Giade said that the report of the investigation was shocking as it revealed that some of the convicts were never taken to the prison to serve their jail terms.
He also explained the financial spending of the agency since 2004 and said that the agency’s audited accounts from 1990 to 2007 which have been submitted to the office of the Auditor General of the Federation and the Public Accounts Committee of the National Assembly are available for public consumption and scrutiny.
Finally, Giade disclosed that the agency is now witnessing the highest level of local and international collaboration and cooperation while he also commended his men for the transparent way which they go about doing their job even as he said that the agency is focused and on course.
