Hi Nolly Yoruba, a purely Yoruba channel aimed at promoting the Yoruba language has debut on HiTV, the proudly Nigerian Pay TV.
The Yoruba channel would go live on October 1 to commemorate Nigeria’s golden jubilee anniversary.
The channel which is the first 24 hours Yoruba channel will feature music, documentaries, interviews, events, news and majorly movies.
Toyin Subair, managing director/chief executive officer of Hi Media Entertainment owners of HiTV explained that HiTV is partnering with the Yoruba movie industry to promote the cultural heritage of the Yorubas on Hi Nolly Yoruba.
Explaining the rationale behind the partnership, Subair noted “that the Yoruba movie industry is the most vibrant in the Nigerian movie industry” and that “using the power of television as a platform, this will to a large extent help promote Yoruba values and culture”.
He envisaged screening great Yoruba movies at cinemas all over the world before the movies go to video and finally to television.
Subair noted that the partnership goes beyond buying and sharing tapes as all necessary things would be put in place to offer world class standard movies with error free subtitling.
Tunji Bamishigbin, a veteran actor in the movie industry in his remarks lauded HiTV on the initiative while pointing out that “entertainment is like food that people must continue to consume, adding that content is the most important thing on Pay TV.
Adebayo Salami alias Oga Bello, also in his remarks said this is the best way to prevent the Yoruba language from extinction because even today’s grandmothers with little knowledge of the English language have to conform with the norm of raising their grand children with the foreign language.
Morayo Akabashorun, content manager at HiTV said to promote Hi Nolly Yoruba, the company would embark on road shows across the western region.
HiTV in the spirit of the country’s golden jubilee anniversary celebrations is also offering its valued existing subscribers and other Nigerians a reason to migrate to the platform that has entertained Nigerians with quality programmes in its three years of existence.
Under this initiative, a complete system of HiTV plus two months premium subscription with installation will be on offer for N15, 000.
The HiTV boss explained that the reduction in the price of the complete HiTV system is to make pay TV more accessible at affordable rates to get new subscribers on board.
