Intercontinental Bank Plc has commissioned an ultra-modern 120-bed hostel it built and donated to the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Rivers State.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufai, the minister of Education commended the bank for the gesture, saying the government and the university council were quite appreciative of the donation.
Mahmoud Lai Alabi, the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive of Intercontinental Bank, noted that the completion of the project was indeed a dream come true, he thanked the state government for the opportunity given the bank to immortalise its name in the university with the donation of the hostel.
Represented at the occasion by Ben Udowa, the regional director, South South Region, Alabi said the bank was aware of the pivotal role education plays in nation building, hence its involvement in the sector.
He added that the bank’s involvement in educational infrastructure development was in recognition of the fact that government could not provide everything needed by the citizenry hence the need for the private sector to rise to the challenges of national development.
According to him, the bank has demonstrated its belief in educational infrastructure development through its “well-known State Scholarship Awards already launched in many states of the federation, and the donation of student hostels to higher institutions of learning, one of which we are here today to commission”.
The Intercontinental boss also commended the governing council of the university for allowing the bank to partner with it in the infrastructural development of the school, saying that he hoped the healthy relationship currently enjoyed would be sustained to enable both parties realize their goals and objectives.
