Lagos Partners DISCOS on Stable Power Supply

Lagos State Government said it is partnering with both the Eko and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Companies in making the power supply for the State stable.

Dr. Taofiq Ajibade Tijani, State commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, disclosed this at the ministerial press briefing to mark the 3rd year of the 2nd term of administration of Mr. Raji Babatunde Fashola in the State.

According to him, the current Independent Power Project (IPP) of the State is expected to generate 47 MW at completion, but presently running on about 33 MW at Lagos, Akute and Alausa aiming at completing the Ikeja and Lekki IPP before the end of the year while the Ikeja IPP will serve the State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Old Secretariat, the Ikeja High Court and the State Police Command at Ikeja, the Lekki IPP would serve the area especially for the lighting of streetlights around the area.

Meanwhile, Tijani said the activities of illegal dredgers have reduced drastically in the State, saying the State records only about 2 or 3 illegal dredging in a month at present adding that the fine for illegal dredging is N1 million and the confiscation of the vehicle(s) and materials used in such illegal dredging.

Tiljani said geological mapping has unveiled that the State is having deposit of limestone, shale gas, bitumen Petroleum, clay and ironstone, though every mineral may not be in commercial quantity but the mapping may still discover more in the State adding that sand is the major mineral deposit the State is blessed with as it is a Coastal State.

Mrs. Damilola Ogunbiyi, general manager of the State Electricity Board, at the briefing said the State currently saves N600m monthly on electricity with the IPP while the public waste N31m on energy because they could not audit the needed electricity formally.

She said the protection of the cable and the street lights are done with the help of different Community in the State who appreciate the need for them. She reinforced on the importance of street light which is beyond beautifying the street but providing security to the people and community.
