Some female final year students of the University of Lagos (Unilag) have been tutored by MultiChoice Nigeria in the fields of Sales, Corporate Communications, Marketing and Operations under the company’s ‘Take a Girl Student to Work’ initiative.
The programme was organised in partnership with the South African High Commission and the South African Chamber of Commerce as part of activities to commemorate the world women’s day.
Segun Fayose, head of Corporate Communications, MultiChoice Nigeria, said the programme was aimed at giving young women the experience of leaving their school environment and exploring the opportunities and challenges available in the work place environment.
He said their participation in MultiChoice’s activities would further strengthen the skills they needed to function in the work place, as well as prepare them for future challenges.
“Women are very important parts of the society and are considered major drivers in any society. This programme is predicated upon the principle that when you educate a man, you educate an individual but when you educate a woman, you educate an entire community and our objective is to appreciate the key role women play in the development of the society.”
Fayose said the reason for selecting final year students was because they were at the threshold of moving into the larger society, hence the needed to be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to function effectively.
“We are open to such avenue to take on those who have passion for the job when the need arises. It is a noble course that could be extended and from my interaction with the young women, they are sound, very independent minded, focused, inquisitive, knowledgeable and they seem poised for the future. They have leadership qualities that can take them very far. That is why we encourage other corporate organisations to be part of this worthy initiative,” he added.
