The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) in mid-night of today (Wednesday, 29, May) will deploy its Aerial Radar (Surveillance) System.
This was disclosed on Monday by Mazi Nnamdi Udoh, managing director of NAMA, at an inter-active session with journalists in Lagos.
According to him, the deployment of Aerial Radar would greatly complement the existing Total Radar Coverage in ensuring seamless air navigation within the country's airspace.
The MD added that the installed equipment would be of economic benefits to airlines as it would save them fuel anf time in addition to the health benefit to Nigerians as a whole with the reduction of Carbon Dioxide emission into the atmoshere.
On its part, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, has granted NAMA the go ahead to deploy the Aerial Control System and an authorised official to license Air Traffic Controllers that would take charge of the system.
Further on the benefits of the system, Udoh highlighted that: ''If you are taking off from Lagos, you don't to change your squak [code used by a pilot to communicate air traffic controller] to Abuja,Kano or Port Harcourt. The controller will tranfer you seamlessly to the next radar and maintain the same squak to land''.
''It saves time, saves fuel and saves money. Having saved airlines time in the past when they used to fly Lagos-Abuja 1hour 10 minutes before,reduced to 50 minutes, the introduction of Aerial Radar Control will once again reduced that time to 40-
45minutes and for the environment, it saves a lot of carbon dioxide emission that could pollute the atmospere'', he noted.
NAMA has been implementing procedual aerial control but now switching over to surveillance aerial control.
