NASS Buys into Social Media for Constitutio Review

The National Assembly is employing the social media to enable Nigerians become part of the constitution amendment process.

Contributing during a public discuss on the Constitution Amendment process, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, deputy Senate President and chairman of the Senate Committee on the Constitution Amendment affirmed that apart from issuing public announcement on the subject, the Committee was looking at means of tweeting some of the provisions listed for amendment, aiming at eliciting public views.

Ekweremadu said after the recent retreat held by the upper chamber of the Assembly, they discovered that issues relating to the immunity clause, Nigerian Police, judiciary, executive, rotation of executive offices among senatorial districts of a state, gender and special group, mayoral status for the Federal Capital Territory Administration, residency and indigene provisions, as well as any other matter that will promote good governance and will improve the Nigerian state, require amendment to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution.

He said, “We intend using social media to reach out to the people so that people will now respond accordingly on how they want the constitution amended.

Apart from harnessing opinions of Nigerians on the home front, members of the upper chamber have considered obtaining views of Nigerian in Diaspora on the amendment process.

 “Apart from using other social media, we shall also use the internet to engage Nigerians in Diaspora, so that every Nigerian who had wanted to contribute or participate in the process will have the way,” the deputy Senate President added.
