The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) has resolved to collaborate with the various security agencies in addressing incessant vandalization and theft of telecommunications infrastructure in the country.
Engr. Ernest Ndukwe, executive vice chairman NCC, disclosed this at the stakeholders’ forum on cable vandalism of telecommunications held in Abuja. He said there was need for the commission to revisit the military decree that punished culprit for willful damage of government properties, and suggested that a fine of N1 billion be imposed on such vandals.
He therefore calls on the perpetrators to desist from such act or face the stiff penalty of paying heavily for damaging telecommunications cables and government infrastructures.
It would be recalled that telecommunications operators in the country have consistently lamented increasing vandalization of their equipment which the attributed as the major cause of poor quality of service being delivered by operators. Among the equipment susceptible to theft and vandalization are generators, diesel and cable.
