#NCSAbuja2017 Focuses on Technology as Catalyst for Achieving SDGs

Experts in the Nigeria’s technology industry are to converge on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, with a focus on technology as catalysts for achieving the United Nations Social Development Goals (#SDGs).

Against this backdrop, the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) is gearing up for its International Conference 2017 holding from July 18-20, 2017 under the Theme, "Information Technology Innovation for Sustainable Development".

Professor Sola Aderounmu, president of NCS, had maintained that the industry needs to do more to assist other sectors of the economy, especially, in combating poverty in the country and creating employment.

Prof. Aderounmu who spoke through Mr Jide Awe, chairman, NCS Conference Committee, said, “Much more must to be done in tech to increase focus and take practical action on: clean energy, eradicating poverty, quality of education and health care, promoting the participation and empowerment of women in the economy and society, digital inclusion and more....”

The Society has identified sustainable development as has become one of the major global issues of this era.

The UN, in recognition of the world’s need for sustainability, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by world leaders at the United Nations summit in September 2015 came into force on 1 January, 2016.

Information Technology enabled innovation is integral to incorporating sustainability into global development.

The 13th International Conference will provide a unique opportunity to bring together stakeholders from government, industry, academia, the United Nations, multilateral agencies, international organizations, youth groups and civil society to share knowledge and experiences towards leveraging IT Innovation to achieve more sustainable and inclusive societies.

Actionable initiatives and solutions will be developed through collaborative dialogue, keynotes, presentations, demonstrations and panels during the Conference.

The sub themes are: Poverty Eradication, Food Security and Digital Inclusion; eHealth, mHealth and Innovation – Sustainable Healthcare for All; Digital Economies: Capacity Building, Startups and Youth Innovation; Sustainable Infrastructure for Innovation, Research and Development

Closing the Digital Gender Gap; Environmental Sustainability and Climate Change – The IT Innovation Imperative; Smart Cities, IT Parks and Digital Nations; E-Government, Digital Development and E-Readiness; Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection and Digital Privacy

Education for All through IT Innovation; Disruptive Technologies for Sustainability: Mobility, IoT, Big Data and Cloud; Agricultural Systems; Robotics and Transport and Traffic Technology.

The Conference Highlights as released by NCS include: Official Opening and Keynotes; Plenary and Parallel Sessions; Technical Sessions; Seminars; Research Consortium; Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Platform; Induction of New Members; Exhibition and Products Launch; Public Sector ICT Showcase; IT Competitions; Fellows’ Forum and Annual General Meeting (AGM).
