New Code, Standards for Engineers Out

Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) is to release a set of codes and standards to guide the practice of engineers in the country.
Segun Ajayi, head of the committee galvanising the existing code and standards of NSE, stated that the code was expected to guide engineers' practice and enhance the production of products that would meet international standards.
"What the NSE is doing now is to get code that can guide the ethics of engineers in the country so that we can be sure that our products and services are up to international standards," he said.
According to him, NSE had had several codes over the years, but there had never been Nigerian code and standards peculiar to the practice of engineers in the country.
"The code and standards being documented now is for Nigerian market. The NSE has many disciplines ranging from, civil, chemical, mechanical, environmental among others, and there are no laid down standards which in most cases, we need to borrow from other countries like Britain, but with this new development, there would be a significant change in the profession," he explained.
According to Ajayi, the committee would make the modalities for the code ready for the approval by the NSE stakeholders in order to bring sanity to the practice of engineering.
"Consequently, we will not have engineering construction work that will not stand the test of time, because there will be standards to comply with," he said.
He, therefore, assured that once there was compliance with the new code and standards, Nigerians could look forward to building reliable structure and machinery that would not stand a risk of collapse at any moment.
To achieve this, Ajayi disclosed that various disciplines of NSE within the engineering practice were working with Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and international bodies like the American Institute of Engineers to regularise various MOU established over the years and invoke its relevant to the Nigerian environment.
He solicited support from government to get the code and standards out to all stakeholders and ensure its implementation when it is finally released.
