nigeriafraud.org, an initiative put together by Michael Gbadebo, and one already gaining currency with Nigeria IT professionals has been launched to fight the increasing activities of online fraudsters in Nigeria.

The initiative hailed as a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s fight against organized online crime is an unofficial Nigeria fraud and scam support website.

nigeriafraud.org is also calling for volunteers to handle support requests for any of the categories listed on the website. It will be a great relief for financial institutions, internet service providers and switching companies who are expected to link to the site.

Gbadebo hope to improve on the site including modification in the base application to enable RSS, public listings and searching.

The promoter of the site in one his recent articles said that fraud was a global problem and not only a Nigerian problem

"To all Nigerians out there - you can make a difference. Promote Nigeria in a positive way and stay honest when dealing with people, because it is through your actions many will judge Nigeria. Together we can change attitudes, make things better and easier for coming generations. Finally to all honest and hard working Nigerians - keep up the good work and hold your heads up high - you are doing great" he added.

Internet or online fraud refers to any type of fraud scheme that uses one or more online services - such as chat rooms, e-mail, message boards, or Web sites - to present fraudulent solicitations to prospective victims, to conduct fraudulent transactions, or to transmit the proceeds of fraud to financial institutions or to others connected with the scheme.

Around the world, Nigeria has earned notoriety as the hub of internet fraud with government and concerned individuals battling to rejig the country’s image.

Nigeria has also established the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) a enforcement agency that investigates financial crimes such as advance fee fraud (419 fraud) and money laundering.

Elsewhere, private citizens under the aegis of Naija_IT_Professionals have initiated efforts to stem the growing activities of Internet fraudsters who have left tales of woes and losses on Nigerians in the past weeks.
