Dr. Eugene Juwah, executive vice chairman, Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), has described the Universal Service Provisional Fund (USPF) as a model for other African countries to emulate.
Speaking to Journalists in Abuja at the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO) conference in Abuja, said that the country has gone through the earlier teething problems associated with the implementation, adding that the Commission is consolidating on the process.
He said that USPF provides fillings to take services to the rural areas, particularly to the unserved and underserved people.
According to him, "The earlier criticism against USPF came up from the initial hiccups encountered. Presently, our model for USPF has become a model throughout Africa.
"We have gone through the teething problems and we are consolidating in the new era and we will soon see that it will be applied to subsidising service to people who are underserved.
"After the restructuring in 2011, USPF has improved. We are now working in conjunction with service providers to provide infrastructure project. We have a project in hand now called Fiber Interconnection that involves MTN, where MTN is taking fiber from their point of presence in the urban areas to the rural areas. These are the major objectives of USPF".
Juwah said that the t objectives of USPF are been realised presently.
