Fresh from its new breathe of life, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has been counting its gains saying its newly introduced mass transit rail service between Minna, Niger state and Kaduna generates over half-a-million naira per trip, a 100 per cent increase from the previous year.
The Railway Corporation which celebrated its first cargo haulage between the South and North of Nigeria a fortnight ago, said the passenger shuttle between Minna-Kaduna has seen it rake in revenue ranging from N500, 000 to N550, 000 on each trip.
This is a significant increase from its January to December, 2012 revenue intake when it made between N200, 000 to N250, 000 per trip on the same route
Sheriff Razaq, public relations manager of the Railway Corp (North West District) said since the beginning of 2013, the corporation has experience passenger traffic upsurge which translates to increase revenue intake.
“From the beginning of this year, our mass transit train makes between N500, 000 and N550, 000 per trip from Minna to Kaduna,” said Razaq.
Razaq said the corporation charged N320 per passenger per trip, while each coach carries between 300 to 350 passengers. 10 coaches are used each trip conveying 3,000 to 5,000 passengers, depending on the patronage.
“The most important thing to note is that our passengers increase on daily basis to the extent that passengers now stand inside coaches,” said Razaq.
