The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), the umbrella body of all the socio-cultural clubs and societies of Ibadan indigenes in Nigeria and Diaspora recently conferred the prestigious award of CCII Distinguished Fellow Award on Mr. Wale Onaolapo, the managing director of Sovereign Trust Insurance plc for his contributions to the development of Ibadan land and achievements as a distinguished professional in the insurance profession.
The award ceremony took place at the prestigious Jogor Centre in the ancient city of Ibadan and was marked with week-long activities of the Ibadan day celebration. It was a sheer display of pomp and pageantry as many distinguished personalities from all walks of life both home and abroad graced the occasion.
According to a statement signed by the Chairman, Executive Committee of the Council, “the prestigious award of CCII distinguished fellow was conferred on deserving Ibadan sons and daughters both at home and in diaspora who have brought honour and pride to themselves and Ibadanland in their various areas of endeavours.”
Wale Onaolapo joined Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc in 1994 as one of the pioneer management team in the capacity of Assistant General Manager (Technical Operations) and rose through the ranks before attaining his current position of Managing Director in January 2008.
A seasoned professional with entrepreneurial bent, Onalapo served in various companies where he acquired wide experience in the business of insurance at different levels. He was with Liberty Assurance Company Limited between 1981-1986, Ban-Doy (Brokers) Company, from 1986-1990, Femi Johnson & Company, Incorporated Insurance Brokers,1990-1992, Unitrust Insurance Company Limited,1992, International Standard Insurers Limited,1992-1994 before joining Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc in 1994 to date.
From inception, the managing director has been an active member of the Jericho Businessmen Club, another frontline socio-cultural association based in Lagos for the advancement of commerce, industry and the development of Ibadanland in particular and Oyo State as a whole. The membership is comprised of Ibadan indigenes resident in the country and those in Diaspora.
He has also been extensively involved in other activities in the community. He served as member, Electoral Committee of LASUMBA Managers Association of Lagos State University in 1998.
He was also elected President of the AMP 12 Class Set Alumni Association of Lagos Business School in November 2003.
Having served in various capacities at committee levels in the prestigious Ikoyi Club 1938, he was eventually elected as the chairman of the table tennis section of the club in February 2007. An adept player, Wale has won numerous laurels to his credit in several tournaments organized by Ikoyi Club 1938.
