Terrorists Bomb Radio Station, IGP Beefs Security in Media Houses

An improvised explosive device detonated at a radio station in Kogi State Monday night killing at least four people, police said on Tuesday.
Mr. Solomon Arase, acting Inspector-General of Police (IG), has therefore ordered a tight security around media houses nationwide to avoid attacks on both the organisations and journalists.
It was unclear whether the attack on the local language Ta’o FM station in Okene town was orchestrated by Boko Haram militants or the powerful organised robbery and kidnapping rings that operate in the West African country.
“Three security guards and an engineer working for the station were killed. We are investigating who could be responsible and why,” Shola Adebayo, the public relations officer for state police, told Reuters.
Adebayo said police believed Ta’o FM was the target.
While Kogi is a way off from northeastern Nigeria, where Islamist group Boko Haram has waged a six-year insurgency, the region has also experienced intermittent attacks by the militants’ intent on creating a caliphate in West Africa.
But the acting Inspector-General of Police has ordered a tight security around media houses nationwide to avoid attacks on both the organisations and journalists.
Emmanuel Ojukwu, force spokesperson, said in a stamen that “The IG is concerned about the recent attacks on the media houses and journalists. He therefore ordered water-tight security around media houses nationwide.
“This is in line with the mandate of the Nigeria Police Force to protect lives and property of the citizens under the law. The IG acknowledges the valuable roles of the media to the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria.”
The statement said the IG further advised Nigerians to be more vigilant and proactive, and to report any suspicious movement or persons to the police promptly for appropriate action.
