Uncommon Service: Innovating for Africa premieres this Wednesday at the Silverbird Cinema in Lagos.
It is a film that celebrates one man’s mission to make a difference by improving the quality of life and health care of thousands of Nigerians. Moved by necessity, Dr. Oluyombo Awojobi used his ingenuity to develop and build medical equipment and materials for his clinic in the rural town of Eruwa, using only local resources and developing environmentally friendly solutions.
Dr. Awojobi is a quintessential inventor who has overcome the limitations of his environment by creating many ingenious solutions such as building a sterilisation oven that is powered by discarded corn cobs and using car parts to build a fully functional operating table. As the nation faces deep economic and social crises, infrastructural decay and a people challenged and demoralised, his story provides a refreshingly positive example of what is possible in Nigeria, if one has vision, courage, and ingenuity.
The production of the film was made possible through “Good Citizenship Award” established by the Ogunbanjo Family to honour the life and work of their mother, Hilda Ogunbanjo, a pioneer in the field of journalism and civic development.
The award was won by Deji Adesanya, who submitted the exciting idea of making a film on Dr. Awojobi’s healthcare and environmentally sustainable inventions, and received the financial and technical support to direct the documentary under the tutelage of Communicating for Change (CFC).
