Channels Television is a fiercely independent television station currently broadcasting in Nigeria, since it was licensed in June 1993 and allocated a frequency on UHF Channel 39. It began transmission in 1995 and now broadcasts to an audience of over 20 million people.
According to the brains behind Channels TV, the establishment of the station was in response to the yearning of Nigerians for a TV station that will give an alternative medium of communication to the government and its policies and hold public officers accountable to the people; accommodate opposing views; inform and educate the general public on how they are governed, as well as what their civic responsibilities are; and uphold the ideals of balanced reporting, objectivity, fairness and the right of the individual to communicate.
The station’s team has produced feature programmes, which have received commendations within and outside Nigeria. Video footages of events and happenings in Nigeria shot by Channels news crew have been used widely by the BBC, CNN, ITN and McNeil/Lehrer News hour.
Channels TV is the first to win the Nigerian Media Merit Award (NMAA) as ‘Broadcast Station of the Year’ for 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2004.
